An epidemic of viral pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is currently wreaking havoc in Vietnam, India, and Pakistan. This highly contagious infection has been rapidly spreading, causing significant concerns for health officials in these countries. With the combination of summer heatwaves and heavy rainfall, the conditions have been ideal for the virus to thrive, particularly in regions with high humidity. The severity of the situation became evident when tens of thousands of schools in Vietnam, India, and Pakistan were abruptly closed in an emergency attempt to contain the virus.
In September alone, Punjab, a province in India, reported a staggering number of new pink eye cases. Health officials tallied a shocking 13,000 new cases in a single day, and the entire month saw over 86,000 cases in the city. The Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, described a distressing situation in schools, stating that every class had an average of five to six affected students. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, the number of afflicted individuals has reached nearly 400,000 nationwide. Vietnam recorded over 63,000 cases of viral conjunctivitis from January to September, representing a significant increase of more than 15 percent compared to the previous year.
Viral conjunctivitis, unlike its bacterial counterpart, is known to be extremely contagious. Various types of viruses can cause this condition, including adenovirus, which accounts for up to 75 percent of infectious conjunctivitis cases. The virus can survive on surfaces for up to 30 days, making it easy for transmission through direct contact with contaminated hands or objects. Isabelle Jalbert, an optometrist and vision scientist, explains that the outbreak in Pakistan appears to involve a highly contagious strain of the virus.
Patients with conjunctivitis typically experience redness, eye pain, swollen eyelids, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and watery discharge. Unfortunately, there is no cure for pink eye, and individuals must endure the symptoms for approximately two weeks or longer until their immune system successfully fights off the virus. During this period, it is crucial for patients to stay at home to prevent further community spread. In severe cases, chronic inflammation of the eye’s cornea can occur, leading to long-term vision issues. Notably, hospital officials in Vietnam have reported that 20 percent of the cases observed in children involve severe complications.
Recurrent conjunctivitis epidemics are a global occurrence, often following a seasonal pattern. However, it is hypothesized that climate changes may have a significant impact on future outbreaks. Although research in this area remains limited, a few studies have suggested that elevated temperatures may increase the risk of local conjunctivitis cases. Additionally, research conducted in China in 2023 found a correlation between elevated humidity and outpatient visits for conjunctivitis. However, low relative humidity, when compared to temperature, can also heighten the risk by causing dryness and irritation. Air pollution is believed to play a role in the spread of the virus as well.
Given the rapidly changing world and the increasing prevalence of viral outbreaks, it is crucial for governments to prepare themselves for similar situations. Educating the public about the symptoms of conjunctivitis and the importance of self-isolation will be vital moving forward. In response to an outbreak in India in 2022 during the monsoon season, experts called for improved disease awareness and extensive telephone-based healthcare services to assist rural and remote communities. This proactive approach can greatly contribute to curbing the spread and impact of future conjunctivitis outbreaks.

The highly contagious nature of the virus, along with climate-related factors, has led to a surge in cases. Efforts to educate the public and enhance disease awareness, coupled with effective healthcare services, are essential in combating the current outbreak and preparing for future scenarios.
